Mojo-Hawassa to see express way

The Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) is currently conducting a feasibility study to construct a parallel toll road project that will stretch from Mojo to Hawassa (Awassa).
The study will help to undertake detailed design work of the new expressway. It is being undertaken by ERA’s own staff.
The Southern Nation, Nationalities and Peoples’ Regional State capital, Hawassa, is 200Km from Mojo Town. Mojo is 73Km east of Addis Ababa. The Addis-Adama toll road, which is Ethiopia’s first expressway, is currently under construction by China Communications Construction Co (CCCC) at a cost of USD 612 million.
ERA had also plans to continue the Addis-Adama expressway further east to Awash; however it is not expected to be implemented within the next few years as the cost to construct this type of project is huge.
“The traffic flow on the route from Mojo to Hawassa is increasing. This is the reason to start the feasibility study for the new expressway,” officials at the authority said.
Even though the feasibility study has commenced, it is not yet been decided to construct the road in the coming few years, according to the officials at the authority.
The current Addis-Adama highway, which is part of the Addis-Djibouti Port corridor road project, is the busiest highway in the country. Awash, 223Km east of Addis Ababa is part of the port corridor, while the Adama-Awash highway is not as busy as the Addis-Adama road.
The six-lane first toll road Addis-Adama construction work commenced in April 2010 and is expected to be completed early 2014.
The expressway will take a different route decreasing the 100 Km road by 20 Km, shorter than the existing road. The Chinese Export and Import (EXIM) Bank financed the road.
